Beneath it was a caricature, a face with a proboscis so gargantuan it would have made Charles De Gaul look like a pixie.

Below the nose lay a smoking gun—the wisps from the barrel rising up into the cavernous nostrils above. When one pushed on past the door into the P.I.’s domain, a cluttered desk greeted the novice inquirer. Behind it sat the chief inquisitor, sporting a sniffer only slightly smaller than the signage outside.Amos was a hungry man, hungry for action.

Fact was he’ d been hungry since seventh grade, when he avoided the lunchroom and its snorting sounds and chortles of laughter. He remained hungry through university too and his first accounting class, a step taken based on his father’s admonition “You’d better develop some marketable skills, son. Preferably something to do with numbers … or radio.”As he’d always been good with numbers, accounting seemed a logical choice.

But sitting in his first class, staring at the blurred digits on the ledger before him, he was deluged by, why am I here? second thoughts, then third thoughts. In an epic moment, he stood from his desk, turned and walked straight out of the classroom. The next day he enrolled in the local community college, Northside, and embarked on the path of his primary passion, law enforcement and criminal behavior. After acing the first quarter classes, he legally changed his name from Amos Dorkmeyer to Amos Shamus—not a hard choice.

He found out soon, he was gifted. He could smell a rat anywhere … literally. In fact, though most humans had an olfactory system (sense of smell) of forty million sensors and German Shepherds two billion, by some freak of nature, Amos had two billion and one. What Amos had cursed since childhood became one of his greatest assets. Now he glories in his marvelous appendage, under which shorter persons quickly seek shelter at the first sign of rain. In the competitive world of private investigation, Amos Shamus has a unique advantage.

Combining the characteristics of Dr. House, Sherlock and of course, Cyrano, Amos almost always solves his cases--usually just by a nose. Now hired by Jay Jay Wilcox to judge his Wild Wilcox Wallopin’ World of Chili Cook-off, Amos catches a surprise on the breeze, a strange whiff of what could only lead to murder.
